Del Mar

Del Mar is a small, seaside hideaway approximately 20 minutes north of downtown San Diego. Defined by calm salt-water lagoons on each end, this charming, laid-back town is best known for its exceptional weather, world famous thoroughbred racetrack, the county fair, fabulous beaches, haute cuisine and unique shopping. The historic downtown village dates back to 1880s. Today it is lined with over 60 shops offering everything from high-end apparel to one-of-a-kind specialty shops. The village hosts 25 restaurants, many providing outside patios overlooking the ocean. Del Mar’s famous beaches include two miles of coastline, where the San Dieguito River meets the sea. Del Mar City Beach is split into northern and southern beaches. To the south is Dog Beach, a great place for volleyball games and a gathering place for dogs. To the north is Del Mar Beach with good swimming, intermediate surf and easy access at every block. The Powerhouse and Seagrove Parks, are located just above the 15th Street surf break; providing a great spot for a picnic. The Powerhouse Park also features a “tot lot,” where kids can play on swings, slides, and climb. And throughout the summer, there are free concerts. The Del Mar Fairgrounds and Racetrack host more than 300 annual events. There are four major annual events, including the annual San Diego County Fair, Surfside Race Place, year-round satellite horse-racing, American Thoroughbred horse-racing track, Del Mar Arena, Golf Center and Horse Park.
